Hawick do the double over Carlton

Hawick & Wilton 169 for 8

Carlton 4th XI 107 all out

Hawick & Wilton win by 62 runs

Half centuries from Ronan Alexander and Phil Mactaggart helped Hawick on their way to a sixth league victory in their last seven matches with a 62 run triumph over Carlton at Buccleuch Park on Saturday.

The home side lost the toss, which has been a rare sight this season as the visitors elected to bowl first on a new deck at Buccleuch Park.

Ronan and Gary Alexander showed glimpses of being back to their best as an opening combination as the pair put on 57 for the first wicket. The Carlton bowlers tested the Hawick batters on a pitch that saw the ball move around, making it difficult to score runs fluently, ensuring it was an exciting game for both sides.

Once Gary Alexander was bowled for 26, the dangerous Evan Alexander and consistent Pierce Solley were both dismissed by Bob Irvine to leave Hawick 64 for three putting the match back in the balance after the hosts had the better of the early exchanges.

But Alexander and Phil Mactaggart kept their composure to put on a 59-run stand with the Hawick skipper notching his first half century of the season. The innings was perfectly set-up for the destructive Euan Hair to come in and boost the Teries total in the latter stages, but it wasn’t to be this time as he was caught off the bowling of Ivan Dawson for 2.

Ryan Johnston was the next man out for 6 as Beattie took his second outstanding catch of the game before Bruce Mactaggart and Justin Tait were both dismissed by leg-spinner Hutchinson. But it was Phil Mactaggart who pushed the score beyond 150 reaching his second fifty of the campaign before Dean Anderson smashed the final ball of the innings to the mid-wicket boundary for 4 to take Hawick to a competitive total of 169.

Due to the conditions, Hawick opted to open the bowling with Gary Alexander and the decision paid off as he grabbed two early wickets, with fellow opener Johnston taking another to leave Carlton on 21 for 3. Alexander bowled with excellent control as his cutters nipped around on the surface meaning he finished with figures of 2 for 8 from his 8 overs.

A partnership of 47 got the visitors back into the game but were always behind the required run rate before Pierce Solley grabbed his first wicket, then a direct hit from Phil Mactaggart run out Murray for 22, meaning two wickets fell for only five runs and Carlton were pegged back to 73 for 5.

From here on, the home side remained in control as Solley took his second wicket of the match and Euan Hair’s leg-spin was rewarded before Justin Tait took a wicket with his first ball.

It was Anderson who wrapped things up with two wickets in four balls meaning Hawick were victorious by 62 runs. The win keeps Hawick third in the table, and will need their opponents Carlton to do them a favour next weekend and defeat Melrose, if Hawick are to stand any chance of finishing in the promotion places this season.
