Brromhall 97 all out

Hawick & Wilton win by 103 runs

Hawick & Wilton continued their promotion charge with another impressive team performance away to a sturdy Broomhall side.

The visitors again won the toss and elected to bat, with father and son duo Ronan and Gary Alexander making a steady start as they put on 38 for the first wicket before the former was caught attempting a pull shot for 11. However, 38 without loss became 40 for two when Evan Alexander was bowled without scoring.

Hawick’s middle order stumbled as the score became 77 or 5 as Gary Alexander was caught by the wicketkeeper for 21 and the dangerous Phil Mactaggart and Stuart Hair were dismissed in quick succession. But the Teries deep batting lineup proved crucial as Pierce Solley and Euan Hair dug deep to prevent Hawick from collapsing by putting on a 71-run partnership. Hair made 39 from 34 balls in a knock that included six fours and two sixes as he took advantage of the short boundary at The Cairns.

Solley added 37 to take his tally to 270 for the season in Division 4. Ryan Johnston and Morgan Tait then added a further 40 runs in an unbeaten partnership which took Hawick to the 200 mark. Johnston scored 33 including smashing the final ball of the innings for six back over the bowlers head to bring up the 200 in style and Tait added a valuable 14 not out to set the hosts 201 for victory.

The visitors knew they had to bowl well to defend their total and got off to the perfect start when Ronan Alexander bowled Miller for 0 with an in-swinging left handed yorker.

Broomhall skipper Chris Hoefling has been in terrific form this season and again looked a threat for the hosts with 292 runs for the season and a top score of 88 not out. Hawick thought they had their man when Hoefling attempted a quick single and Ronan Alexander threw the ball that clipped the stumps with the batsman well out of his ground but remarkably the bails didn’t come off the stumps and the Broomhall captain survived.

However, shortly after Ryan Johnston had the danger man trapped LBW for 22 to put Hawick in control.

A quick collapse of wickets where Stuart Hair and Gary Alexander bowled with excellent control and left the home side 74 for 8 and had Hawick on the brink of victory.

The Teries were again impressive in the field with five catches being taken, including two by Mactaggart off the bowling of Tait who wrapped up the win with the final two wickets to dismiss the hosts for 97.

17-year-old Rhys Tait also made his debut for the First XI, becoming the sixth teenager to play in Division 4 for Hawick this season and he bowled well in his two overs and was unlucky not to pick up his first wicket for the club.

After the win, this sets up a crucial fixture next weekend as third place Hawick host second placed Dunfermline for a battle in the promotion places.
