Hawick and Wilton

Winning streak ended at Drummond Trinity

Ronan, 9 July 2019 14:28

Hawick & Wilton 152 for 7

Drummond Trinity 153 for 6

Drummond Trinity win by 4 wickets

Hawick’s five match winning run came to an end as they were narrowly defeated by Drummond Trinity 2’s in Division 4 on Saturday.

The young Teries again performed well but it wasn’t enough to gain victory on their travels.

Hawick batted first and the new opening combination of Bruce Mactaggart and Gareth Welsh looked to lay a platform for the Borders team to set another high total.

However, it was not to be the case this time around as the Buccleuch Park men found themselves in trouble at 24 for 3.

Pierce Solley and Phil Mactaggart set about the rebuilding task and eased any nerves of a collapse by steadying the ship and taking the score to 60 for 3 at the halfway stage.

It was difficult for the usually fluent duo to increase the run rate due to a long boundary up the hill at Inverleith Park and a slow outfield with thick grass meaning fours and sixes were difficult to come by.

Solley made 21 as he continued to be consistent at the top of the order and Mactaggart added a solid 30 giving Hawick a decent platform to boost their total in the latter stages of the innings.

Euan Hair showed a brief glimpse of what he’s capable of by smashing a six to get off the mark but was soon caught two deliveries later and the dangerous Ryan Johnston was bowled, leaving Hawick 106 for 7.

Skipper Ronan Alexander and Morgan Tait made an unbeaten partnership worth 46 as the visitors made it up to 152 for 7 as Alexander struck three fours in his 30 not out and Tait scored 17 from 22 balls keeping the league’s leading wicket taker S Amir quiet as he couldn’t add to his tally of 16 wickets for the season.

The hosts began their reply by taking risks with some rash shots that found gaps in the Hawick field before Alexander grabbed the first wicket with Justin Tait taking another composed catch.

The score became 32 for 2 when Morgan Tait got in on the act as his brother Justin dived to his left to take a sharp catch at short fine leg.

A 48-run partnership kept the match evenly poised before F Riaz, who scored 88 in the last fixture between the sides, was caught off the bowling of Euan Hair for 24.

Johnston came back for his second spell to bowl with venom and bowled O Mazhar for 30 with a perfect yorker.

Morgan Tait’s accurate bowling earned him a second wicket but was unlucky not to get more as he had two very good lbw shouts which were turned down.

Johnston grabbed the sixth Hawick wicket to give them a glimmer of hope but in the penultimate over the hosts got over the line courtesy of H Jamal who bludgeoned an unbeaten 40 from 38 balls which proved to be a match winning knock.

Despite the defeat, Hawick remain fourth in the league table and are still within touching distance of creeping further up the division and aim to get back to winning ways on home turf against Watsonians on Saturday.
