Hawick & Wilton win by 151 runs

Hawick & Wilton secured their first away victory since August 2017 to climb up to fifth place in ESCA Division Four after a 151-run triumph over Carlton 4’s.

Lee Stewart smashed an unbeaten 59 from 45 balls and Euan Hair starred with the ball as he claimed three wickets to help Hawick get an important win.

With seven first team regulars missing from the squad, including two late cry-offs, the depleted Teries travelled to the capital with 10 men for the first half, with Stewart needing to leave at the interval, meaning Hawick had to field with nine men, but all nine stood up to the task magnificently.

After losing the toss, Hawick were put into bat and Staurt Hair got the visitors off to a flyer as he hit 40 from 26 deliveries in a knock that included six fours and two sixes. Fellow opener Ronan Alexander continued where Hair left off as he hit 31 and found the boundary four times.

Evan Alexander (18) and Euan Hair (13) both got starts but failed to kick on as the Teries looked set to make a big total after their rapid start. Declan Solley ensured Hawick had wickets in hand as he glued the middle order together with a composed 12.

However, it was Gareth Welsh and Lee Stewart who helped Hawick get up to a huge score of 249 as they put on a 101-run partnership, making the most of the loose deliveries and the short boundaries. Welsh posted a career best 34 which included six fours and Stewart smashed three sixes in his unbeaten half century.

There was plenty work to do in reply, but Stuart Hair ensured Hawick got off to the perfect start as he secured a caught and bowled from a slower delivery in his brace of wickets in a man of the match performance. Ronan Alexander also got in on the act to leave Carlton toiling at 20 for three.

A 34-run partnership gave Carlton a glimmer of hope but four wickets fell for only four runs to leave the score 58 for seven. Welsh capped off a fine day with a caught and bowled as Hair ripped through the hosts middle order with a trio of wickets which included a solid catch at gulley from Solley.

A well taken run out from Harris Brogan after an accurate Stuart Hair throw before two quick wickets by Dean Anderson ensured Hawick secured a huge 151 run victory on their travels.

Next up for Hawick is a home fixture on Saturday to Border rivals Peebles, where the club is hosting a gin tasting session from Lindsey Laing at 4pm onwards with entry prices at £10 which will get you four drinks of your choice.
