Hawick & Wilton win by 16 runs

Hawick lifted the first ever meeting of the Gordon Johnstone Memorial Cup after a 16 run victory over Langholm in very damp conditions.

Key contributions with the bat from Bruce Mactaggart and Pierce Solley helped the Teries reach 129 from their 20 overs and tight bowling from Ryan Johnston, Ronan Alexander and Morgan Tait got Hawick over the line to lift the silverware.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Mactaggart and Start Hair got the hosts off to a rapid start before the latter was bowled by Bailey Donaldson for 19. Phil Mactaggert was then bowled for 0, but Pierce Solley came in and swung the game back in Hawick’s favour with some strong hitting and got the ball to zip to the boundary in the wet conditions. He made 33 in another solid knock as he continued his good form with the bat.

Bruce Mactaggart was then run out after contributing 37 as he continues to play well in his role at the top of the order. Ryan Johnston smashed the last two balls of the innings for six to get Hawick up to a strong total of 129 for six.

Johnston then showed his capabilities with the ball as he bowled an excellent opening spell to restrict Langholm from getting off to a good start. Alexander collected the first wicket when Phil Mactaggart took a steepler of a catch at cover with the ball swirling in the drizzle.

Ashton-Smith (30) and Piszczykiewicz (13) began to find some rhythm before Morgan Tait impressed to remove both the dangerous batsmen.

Tait grabbed his third of the game and the Muckle Toon’s skipper Graham Park was run out as Hawick got on the front foot in the now pouring rain.

Neither side let the conditions affect them as a strong counter-attacking partnership from Donaldson (17) and Bell (14) got the visitors back in the game. A second catch from wicketkeeper Euan Hair off the bowling of Alexander and another run out put the hosts on the verge of victory.

Some big hits in the last over from Aidan Wilson (12*) got Langholm to withing 16 runs of their target but it was Hawick who came out on top to lift the trophy.

The two clubs will compete for the trophy again next season with the match taking place at Castleholm, Langholm.
