Hawick & Wilton win by 3 wickets

Hawick & Wilton got their first victory of the season on Saturday after some match winning batting from Evan Alexander, Stuart Hair and Ryan Johnston.

The Teries chased down their target of 130 with three wickets to spare in a tense encounter at Buccleuch Park.

Broomhall captain Chris Hoefling won the toss and chose to bat, and Hawick got off to the perfect start when Johnston took a wicket in the first over of the match.

However, the visitors skipper dominated the scoring with several boundaries as he punished any loose deliveries from the Hawick attack, but runs were few and far between at the other end. Despite it not working in the early stages for the hosts, they had an almost endless list of bowling options which clearly worked to their advantage as Hawick began to turn the screw.

Johnston struck twice more before Liam Garnett grabbed the important wicket of Hoefling who made 56.

In his first game of the season, Gary Alexander didn’t take long to get into his stride as his accurate bowling tied the visitors down as well as grabbing his first wicket of the 2019 campaign.

However, Ewen Brand played some excellent driven shots which sparked a counter-attack, as he made an unbeaten 39.

But Ronan Alexander got in on the act before Stuart Hair grabbed three wickets in an over, then Lee Stewart wrapped things up with the final wicket meaning Hawick needed 130 for victory.

In reply, Gary Alexander and Bruce Mactaggart made a steady start before the latter was caught for nine and Ronan Alexander was trapped lbw three balls later.

When Gary Alexander dragged the ball onto his stumps for 14 and Lee Stewart was caught for seven, Hawick were in a spot of bother.

However, Garnett smashes two sixes in an over to boost Hawicks score but he was soon bowled for 16 leaving the Teries middle order with a lot of work to do.

Being 57 for 6 didn’t phase young wicketkeeper Evan Alexander or Hair as they batted maturely, knowing that if they stayed at the crease for any length of time, the total would take care of itself.

This proved to be the case as the pair put on a partnership of 39 before Hair was bowled at the worst possible time. Broomhall opening bowler Hoefling’s last delivery of his eight overs knocked Hair’s off stump back after he’d made 27 to leave Hawick six down still needing 34 for victory.

Johnston joined Alexander at the crease and the pair continued to bat with composure and keep the scoreboard ticking and finding the boundary at important times.

Alexander has found a bit of form recently and his unbeaten 30 put Hawick on the verge of victory. With 9 runs required, Johnston eased any Hawick nerves as he smashed consecutive sixes to guide the home side to their first victory of the season.
