Selkirk win high scoring Border Derby

Selkirk win by 42 runs

Hawick & Wilton climbed out of the relegation zone despite losing a thrilling Border derby against Selkirk.

Hawick’s fielding let them down as several dropped catches were punished by Greg Fenton and Rory Banks who both went on to score half centuries for the Souters.

In reply, a maiden half century in only his third game for the club by Liam Garnett wasn’t enough to get the Teries over the line as a late batting collapse left them with too much to do.

Bowling first, Ryan Johnston grabbed the early breakthrough for Hawick as Kenny Paterson chipped the ball into the reliable hands of Phil Mactaggart.

The home side then missed the chance to have Fenton out on just 2 which turned out to be an expensive mistake.

Johnston and Ronan Alexander helped keep the run rate down as the pair bowled well in the early stages.

But Fenton and Banks began to find their groove and increased the tempo.

Garnett thought he had the Selkirk skipper caught behind with an edge on 48 but Hawick’s strong appeals were waved away for a reason that still remains unknown.

Two more drops from the bowling of Gary Alexander and one from Phil Mactaggart left Hawick to rue their mistakes but did eventually find the breakthrough when Pierce Solley took an excellent diving catch on the boundary to remove Banks who batted brilliantly for his 79.

Then a run out from Ronan Alexander dismissed Jordan Reid as the visitors looked to accelerate in the closing stages.

Some big hitting from Fenton and Bob Wilkinson meant Hawick were set 220 for victory.

In reply, Hawick lost Gary Alexander early doors but Ronan Alexander and Garnett counter attacked to take the game to the visitors.

Well ahead of the required run rate, the pair put on 57 for the second wicket before the captain was bowled by Ian Gardiner for 29.

Solley was then bowled in the same over but Phil Mactaggart helped support Garnett as the game remained well in the balance.

Garnett brought up his 50 with Hawick looking in the ascendancy before Mactaggart was bowled for 23.

Garnett then fell 10 runs short of his century in an excellent knock, scoring 90 from 74 balls.

Once he was out, Hawick were still in the game but from being 143 for 3, the Teries crumbled to 177 all out falling 42 runs short of their target.

However, by picking up 7 bonus points, this meant Hawick leapfrogged Haddington in the league table to escape the drop zone, but face two crunch matches against fellow relegation threatened sides Murrayfield DAFS and Marchmont in the next fortnight.
