Hawick & Wilton win by 5 wickets

Hawick’s cricketers got back to winning ways with a vital five wicket victory at home to Fauldhouse on Saturday.

A ruthless bowling performance put the Teries in control, but after being 0 for 2 in reply, Hawick held their nerve to get over the line comfortably.

Skipper Ronan Alexander led by example and tore through the visitor’s top order with four early wickets to leave Fauldhouse in all kinds of trouble.

Hawick’s catching was perfect as Alexander held on for a caught and bowled whilst Euan Hair, Rory Anderson and Evan Alexander also showed safe hands in the home sides excellent start.

Ryan Johnston also got in on the act to leave the score at 40 for 5 after it being 12 for 4.

Neil Storey claimed two wickets on his first game of the season after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines but bowled as if he’d never been away.

Debutant Liam Garnett from Manchester also bowled with fine control and grabbed his first wicket in a Hawick shirt.

Gary Alexander also bowled well to only concede three runs in five overs help restrict the runs despite a frustrating late partnership from the Fauldhouse batsmen which took the score from 68 to 91. However, a sharp run out from Ronan Alexander brought the final wicket and Hawick were set 92 for victory.

In reply, Hawick got off to a disastrous start losing Gary Alexander to the first ball of the innings, then the dangerous Garnett soon after leaving the Buccleuch Park men in all kinds of trouble at 0 for 2.

However, captain and vice-captain Ronan Alexander and Phil Mactaggart remained composed as they rebuilt the innings and looked to ease any nerves.

Mactaggart’s counter attacking 21 included some big shots, but he was caught by the wicketkeeper with the score on 29.

Euan Hair added 14 which included one huge six as the game swung in Hawick’s favour.

17-year-old Evan Alexander scored 7 to take the home side within touching distance of an important win, before Stuart Hair smashed a six to get Hawick almost there.

It was captain Alexander who struck the winning runs in his knock of 26 not out which showed real maturity and composure in a difficult situation which helped guide his team to the all important win with almost 10 overs to spare.
