Penicuik grab narrow win in thriller

Hawick & Wilton 142 all out

Penicuik 145 for 8

Penicuik win by 2 wickets

An unbeaten half century and four wickets from Ronan Alexander wasn’t enough for Hawick as they fell to an agonisingly close defeat against top of the table Penicuik on Saturday.

The captain carried his bat for 53 as Hawick made 142 all out before the visitors chased it down with only 2 overs to spare and 2 wickets left.

The Teries batted first, with Ronan promoted back to the top of the order alongside Gary Alexander, and the pair made a solid start without looking in too much trouble against the pace bowling of Ollie Picken.

However, Alexander senior was caught as he tried to pull a short delivery after scoring 10.

Shaz Gulzar added 9 as he looked to play a counter attacking knock before Stuart Hair was caught for 1 to leave Hawick in a spot of trouble.

But with Alexander well set and Phil Mactaggart beginning to strike the ball cleanly, it eased any nerved before the latter was caught for 11.

Euan Hair played a vital role in the Hawick innings as he played some aggressive shots and looked a dangerous threat before he was out lbw for 31.

With Evan Alexander and Morgan Tait falling in quick succession, that put Hawick on the back foot again. But Ryan Johnston kept his cool to score 15 in another key partnership with Alexander.

The skipper brought up his half century after a quick single which was well applauded by his team mates in a knock he had to work hard to get to his 50 and couldn’t have come at a better time as he had struggled with the bat earlier in the season.

Hawick’s tail didn’t wag and the Teries were all out for 142 with Alexander still unbeaten on 53.

In reply, Hawick’s opening bowlers Ryan Johnston and Stuart Hair caused problems but didn’t get the wickets they deserved.

It was Alexander who found the breakthrough as he bowled a corker of a delivery that swung then seamed off the pitch, completely deceiving the batsman but somehow didn’t hit the stumps. However, with the batsman standing outside his crease, wicketkeeper Evan Alexander whipped the bails off and the stumping gave Hawick the breakthrough they desperately needed.

He claimed his second soon after with a caught and bowled.

The match remained in the balance with the scoring rate even but Penicuik having wickets in hand meant it looked to be a close game.

Gary Alexander took three wickets in a tight spell which helped give Hawick a platform to possibly grab a win from, including the wicket of Penicuik opener Jack Hilton. Hilton appeared to be struggling early on with the pace and bounce of Hair, but he battled through to make 46 which proved to be vital for his team.

Ronan Alexander took a further two wickets to leave the visitors 6 down but the match still in the balance.

Shaz Gulzar got in on the act but it proved to be too little too late and the table toppers squeezed their way to victory with just nine balls to spare.
