Grange 3rd XI 260 for 5

Hawick & Wilton 152 all out

Grange 3rd XI win by 108 runs

With seven first team players missing, Hawick managed to collect eight bonus points in their defeat at Grange on Sunday.

The Teries travelled with a depleted squad due to rugby commitments and injuries, but those who filled in more than contributed although Hawick lost.

After losing the toss and being made to field, Hawick’s opening bowlers couldn’t find the early breakthrough but Phil Mactaggart held on to a fine catch from the bowling of Craig Thomson to get the visitors into the game.

The other Grange opening batsman had to retire hurt after being struck in the back of the leg from a shot by his team mate. Then Rory Anderson grabbed his first wicket of the season as Thomson held on to the catch.

With the game looking in the balance at the halfway point, Grange then ran away in the second half as Tom Martin scored an unbeaten century.

Anderson was again the main man showing fight for Hawick as he picked up his second wicket of the game then contributed in a run out.

With the Teries needing a mammoth total of 261 with a depleted team, they faced an uphill task after openers Declan Solley and Alexander fell early and Phil Mactaggart soon followed to leave the visitors in all kinds of trouble.

However, a counter attacking 19 from Thomson boosted Hawick spirits.

Then Anderson and Evan Alexander built a solid partnership with a flurry of boundaries. The game was beyond Hawick but they knew how important it was to collect bonus points which could be vital at the end of the season.

Anderson scored a stylish 33 whilst Alexander chipped in with a well made 25.

The score was 112 for 8 when Gary Roberson, playing cricket for the first time, joined Shahzaib Gulzar at the crease. The pair put on an outstanding partnership of 39, with Gulzar dominating the scoring.

He struck eight fours on his way to 41 before being trapped lbw and Hawick were soon all out for 152.

With the majority of the first team missing, it was a credible performance from the Teries, who will now look to pick up their first win on Saturday as they take on Leith FAB at Buccleuch Park.
